TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
Base metal and cladding metal material specifications
The base metal plates shall meet the corresponding category and requirements of GOST 5520, ASTM А516, ASTM A387, ASTM A105, ASTM A182, ASTM A336, or EN 10028-2, EN 10028-3, EN 10222-2. The base metal shall be ultrasonically inspected for integrity and conform GOST 22727 class 1, ASTM A578/A578M-07, EN 10160, or other corresponding standards.
The cladding metal plates shall correspond to the relative specification.
By agreement with the Customer all corrosion-resistant cladding-steel undergo intercrystalline corrosion test with results recorded into the test certificate.
The cladding metal plates can be enlarged by arc-argon or plasma-arc welding according to the Customer’s demand specified in the order. The Customer can specify the weld inspection method (X-ray, dye penetrant or others). If necessary, the enlarged plates can be tempered and straightened. Weld reinforcement is removed on both sides of the plate.
Clad Plates Specifications
Mechanical properties
Mechanical properties of base metal shall conform to the requirements prescribed for the base steel grades in GOST 5520, GOST 8479 or ASTM А516, ASTM A387, ASTM A105, ASTM A182, ASTM A336, or EN 10028-2, EN 10028-3, EN 10222-2, or additional requirements according to Axens, or others.
Mechanical properties of cladding metal shall conform to the relevant specification and shall be indicated in the mill test certificate. In case of corrosion-resistant steel, the results of the intercrystalline corrosion test can be included into the test certificate by the Customer’s request.
Mechanical properties of clad plate shall conform to the specifications TU-1880-002-15190236-2011 or other standard requirements accepted by the Customer and specified in the order, in particular GOST 10885, ASTM A263, A264, A265, and EN 13445-2. When other specification is indicated in the order, a standard for testing shall be specified, including the number and shape of the samples and the zone of sampling.
Shear strength for cladding metal determined by a bond quality inspection shall be minimum 220 MPa.
Resistance to separation of the cladding metal from the base metal shall be at least 260 MPa for corrosion resistant steel and 220 MPa for copper and nickel alloyed steel.
Bond strength can be determined by a cold bend test performed through an angle of 160° with the cladding layer in compression. Bent specimen shall not show separation of the cladding metal from the base metal and visible cracks in the contact zone of the bonded layers.
Clad plates are produced heat-treated for stress relief. The type and mode of thermal treatment are specified by the Manufacturer. The recommended modes of heat treatment are in the range of temperature from 420 °C up to maximal 920 °C, holding time at the specified temperature is 1 to 4 hours. The heat treatment schedule can be attached to the certificate for the clad plate on the Customer’s request.
The recommended modes are shown in the Table:
Cladding metal | Temperature, °C | Holding time, hours | Rate heating/cooling, not faster °C/hour |
---|---|---|---|
Austenitic steel* | 620-920 | 1-3 | 90 |
Ferritic steel | 620-920 | 1-3 | 90 |
Nickel alloy | 610-720 | 2-4 | 90 |
Copper alloy | 420-520 | 1-2 | 90 |
*Post heating of up to 1200 C is permissible for shaping works without any risk of layers separation.
The clad plates can be furnished without heat-treatment as agreed upon with the Customer.
Bond Integrity and Continuity
Continuity and integrity of bond shall correspond to the classification according to the standard GOST 22727 and as shown in the Table:
Class of plate | Total unbounded area, cm2 | |
---|---|---|
minimum registered | maximum permissible | |
01 | as agreed with the Customer | |
0 | 5 | 20 |
1 | 10 | 50 |
The Customer can stipulate the more restrictive requirements in the certain case and choose another standard specification for the bond quality inspection, in particular according to ASTM A578/578M-07, EN10160.
Surface Finish
Plate cladding surface corresponds to the following conditions:
- without conditioning;
- sandblast cleaned;
- grinded;
- vacuum-arc cleaned (patent RF no.2133274).
Overall Dimensions
Permissible variation in thickness, width and length of the clad plates shall correspond to the normal accuracy of rolling according to the standard GOST 19903 or GOST 10885 (see Table 3). Other standard specifications or special tolerances are available upon the Customer’s request. Permissible variation shall be specified in the order.
The Manufacturer uses the initial material within the standard range of sizes, if not otherwise indicated. If the size ordered is out of the standard range, the Manufacturer uses the nearest maximal standard size. The cladding metal is always made with the positive tolerance, if otherwise is not indicated in the order. Variation in flatness for the Clad plates shall not exceed 5 mm per 1 meter length. Other variations in out-of-flatness are available by agreement with the Customer, in particular according to EN 10029.
