Clad plates «Steel-Titanium alloys»
Clad plates Steel-Titanium Alloys are used for fabrication of components for heat-exchanging apparatus and pressure vessels in power and chemical engineering, and electrochemical units.
Specification: TU-1880-001-15190236-2011 «Steel-Titanium Clad plates produced by method of explosion welding» developed by the Central Research Institute of Structural Material PROMETEY for AO Energometall.
Clad plates are produced with the base metal in carbon, low-alloyed steel of grades 09G2S, 20K, 22K of all categories according to GOST 5520, or ASTM A516 Gr.60, Gr.65, Gr.70, ASTM A387 Gr.ll, Gr.12, Gr.22, or EN10028-2 P235-P355NH (normalized), or EN10028-3, etc., or flat forgings GOST 8479, ASTM A105, ASTM A182, ASTM A336, EN10222-3 etc., and the cladding metal in Titanium grades BT1-0, BT1-00 GOST 19807 or ASTM B-265 Gr.l,Gr.2.
Range of Sizes
Clad plates are produced of rectangular type with thickness of blanks from 5 to 300 mm, width 300 to 5000 mm, and length 400 to 9000 mm.
Other sizes and types of configuration (different from a rectangular type) are acceptable by agreement with the Customer.
Overall dimensions of each clad plate in a lot shall be specified in the order.
Thickness of titanium alloy cladding: in the range from 2 to 12 mm.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
Base Metal and Cladding Metal
Clad plates shall meet the requirements of GOST 2520 cat. 12-18, ASTM A516, ASTM A387 and EN10028-2, EN10028-3 with ultrasonic control of base metal acc. to GOST 22727 class 1, ASTM A578/A578M-07, EN10160, or other corresponding standards.
The titanium cladding metal shall conform to the requirements of GOST 22178 (Titanium and titanium alloys sheets). Titanium sheet shall be ultrasonically tested according to GOST 22727 class 1 or ASTM B265. Hydrogen content in titanium sheet shall not exceed 0.007%.
It is permissible to enlarge the titanium cladding by TIG-welding of titanium plates with quality control of the weld according to requirements of a Customer, in particular OST V5R.95118-2001.
Requirements to Clad Plates
Mechanical properties of base metal shall conform to the specification for the steel grade used. Shear strength determined by a bond quality inspection shall be minimum 220 MPa.
Resistance to separation of the cladding metal from the base metal is an optional parameter and shall be minimum 180 MPa.
Bond strength can be determined by a cold bend test performed through an angle of 120 degrees with the cladding layer in compression.
Clad plates are heat-treated for stress relief. The type and mode of thermal treatment is specified by the Manufacturer. The recommended modes of heat treatment are within the range of temperatures from 380 °C up to maximum 520 °C, the holding time at the specified temperature is 2-4 hours.
Bond Continuity and Integrity
Continuity and integrity of bond in clad plates shall correspond to the classification according to the standard GOST 22727 and as shown in the Table 1:
Quality Class of plate | Reference unbonded area, cm2 | |
---|---|---|
minimum registered | maximum permissible | |
01 | as agreed with the Customer | |
0 | 5 | 20 |
1 | 10 | 50 |
Overall Dimensions
Permissible variation in thickness, width and length of the clad plates shall correspond to the normal accuracy of rolling according to the standard GOST 19903 or requirements of the Customer.
Variation in out-of-flatness for the clad plates shall not exceed 5 mm per 1 meter length. Other variations in out-of-flatness are available by agreement with the Customer, in particular according to EN 10029.
Documentation
Each lot of clad plates is provided with the material quality document acc. to GOST 7566 or the Certificate 3.1 acc. to EN10204, including the following additional data:
- steel grade of the base metal,
- steel/alloy grade of the cladding metal,
- heat number and chemical composition of the base metal,
- heat number and chemical composition of the cladding metal,
- shearing strength,
- resistance to separation,
- the results of bending test,
- class of bond continuity,
- ultrasonic control certificate,
- cladding plate layout in case of being merged by welding.
Additional Fields of Application
AO Energometall has performed successful tests in cladding of titanium alloys, in particular PT3V. High parameters of the bond are within those stipulated in TU-1880-001-15190236-2011 and confirmed by FSUE CRISM Prometey.
We are ready to develop a new kind of production with titanium alloys cladding by a Customer request and issue a correspondent standard specification for this new product.
